Gustav update ...

I am safely ensconced in a small hotel in Duluth, Georgia. I have been obsessing over the news and have been watching nearly non-stop since I arrived yesterday evening.

So far I am guardedly optimistic. It looks as though the city might survive this hit. I admit I am slightly concerned with the overflow from the industrial canal in the 9th ward but at least the levee is holding and there is no reason to think otherwise. I haven't heard anything about the canal near my house that breached last time (the 17th street canal) nor any of the levees on lake Pontchartrain (which would greatly affect me) but I am under the opinion that "no news is good news".

We will know more as the hours progress but I am not going to stop obsessing until ~noon tomorrow. Lots of what I have heard says that there could be storm surge problems until tomorrow morning.

However, if all goes well Nagin said that he might be opening back up the city as early as tomorrow night! Huzzah!
