A sad day in New Orleans ...

I haven't posted in a while even though I promised myself that I would get back in the habit of coming here and being a part of the community again. This past couple of weeks has been inordinately insane with great highs and utterly devastating lows.

I had a good friend die a very sudden and tragic death last week. Jessica Hawk was an ex-employee of mine and though she left on odd terms - she and I still spoke on the phone and were friends.

On Monday (August 11) I was pulled aside by my boss and told that Jessica had been found murdered at her home in the Bywater district. I have since found out that the murder was exceedingly violent and it looks like she might have known her assailant.

I honestly don't know how to deal with this because it is simply hard to accept that something like this would have been done to anyone I know. She was such an amusing person with dry humor, a quick wit, and a true kindness. I spent a lot of time with her during the set up of the Insectarium. Until this last weekend when Elizabeth visited, she was the only person I had ever walked the French Quarter with.

I can't imagine what her family is going through. My only consolation is that the last time I saw her she was healthy and happy. I can only hope that she is at peace and the person responsible will be brought to justice.

It is odd because I don't know if Jessica realizes the footprint she left on this city. Her murder has inspired a march lamenting those who have died in the city over the past year. People are leaving hearts and plants (she was a botanist) all up and down the 3000 block of Chartres street. I can't help but hope she knew that she was important to this many people.

She will truly be missed but never forgotten.
